HIP Reviews: Funny, entertaining yet predictable is what Na Maloom Afraad 2 happens to be

Apart from that exposé that's provided to the audience with the songs, I could tell you that Na Maloom Afraad 2 will entertain you. The film starts off with highlighting the inequalities in our society and keeps the theme through-out the movie.
Farhan (Fahad Mustafa) and Shakeel bhai (Javed Sheikh) are threatened by goons and very soon it leads to them becoming dirt poor once again. Moon (Mohsin Abbas Haider) unknowingly invites them over to Cape Town. And its in Cape Town, the trio runs into problems as they look to find a short cut to get rich once again (or richer in case of Moon). Sheikh al Baklawa played by Nayyar Ejaz has a golden commode where he hides his ‘Pink diamonds'. There is kidnapping, swearing, shooting, dancing, two "Gunday" inspired villains and lots and lots of jokes that take the film forward.
Will they find the diamonds, will the kidnapped girls be saved, what happens to the pot? I am pretty sure you could answer these questions after watching the trailer. Hence, why the title of this review has the word predictable.
What NMA 2 lacks in terms of twists and turns in the story, it entirely makes up for it with tremendous acting, funny one liners and an overall stylish look of the film.
Javed Sheikh and Saleem Mairaj (who plays one of the Gunday) are the two best performers on display. Fahad Mustafa is at his quirky best as he inevitably gets the best lines. Having watched him talk extempore, one wonders how many of his dialogues are improvised on delivery. Mohsin Abbas Haider provides the required edginess and caution to his character Moon. Also, I was personally really delighted to see him not overdoing his shirtless scenes with his toned-up body. His love interest Pari (Hania Aamir), is a lovely addition to the cast. She is all dolled up for her character and aptly plays the confused girl. Urwa Hocane just plays her part but left with a little room to deliver any punch, she does what she best could.
There are some hilarious sequences like the relatable not-being-able-to-find-shopping-bag scene. In the climax, Javed Sheikh goes through a bit of a transformation which leads to some laugh-out-loud moments. I just wish the director had played on it a bit more.
The songs are not worth discussing much, and could be cut out entirely (I am looking at Hug Lay). I could use a whole range of adjectives to describe the one song "Hug Lay" because I still don't understand how the censor board allowed this song with bikini clad models to run?. Stunning, bewildering, astounding and many more words of the same genre could categorize my reaction on the song because I just want to know how this happened. AIB (a famous Indian group) did a parody party song that includes a line ‘kyun k ye gana hai censors will let it go’. Maybe that is it with Hug Lay as well.
Situations in the film sometimes do feel a bit doctored or forced but that is how most comedies work. There are a few tiny bits of details which I found really refreshing for a Pakistani film, like Moon owning a 1960s vintage car and also decorating his home with a set of car models, offered good visual delight.
Na Maloom Afraad in 2014 was a breath of fresh air. It showed Karachi’s ugly under belly without exposing it too ferociously to shock the audiences. The strength of the movie was how the director, Nabeel Qureshi had portrayed the chaos that grips this wonderful city.
In 2017, Na Maloom Afraad 2, takes us to Cape Town, South Africa. Hence the biggest strength of the director is taken away. Having said that, still NMA 2 was a cleverly made film which will entertain a varied crowd. However, here is hoping Nabeel Qureshi takes on a different genre in his next and takes Pakistani cinema in a new direction like he did with Na Maloom Afraad.

Promotions for 'Na Maloom Afraad 2' to be bigger and better than before

We have two major films coming out on Eid-ul-Azha, and mind you, we're every bit excited for both Na Maloom Afraad 2 and Punjab Nahi Jaungi. Promotions for PNJ have kick started in Punjab, and Na Maloom Afraad 2 is still working with its dubbing, but no public appearances have been made by the cast or the team as yet.
Wondering, what's taking NMA 2, HIP got in touch with the makers of the film to know when we can expect promotions for the film to begin, because the competition is on it already. Here's what they had to say,
"Na Maloom Afraad was the first ever Pakistani film to launch on-ground promotional activities and then the rest followed suit. We're waiting for just the right time and then we'll launch our promotional campaign for Na Maloom Afraad 2 with the same zeal and zest, perhaps more than Na Maloom Afraad initially." Nabeel Qureshi told us.
"Apart from making public appearances and visiting cinemas, universities etc, we're also planning a few groundbreaking activities for the promotions of Na Maloom Afraad 2, the likes of which haven't been seen before. We launched our trailer in an entirely different way this time, and the rest followed suit, and we'll do the same for the promotions. We just want the time to be right to begin with our campaign." the producer, Fizza Ali Meerza answered.
We also reached out to the man of the hour, Fahad Mustafa, to know his plans regarding the promotions of the film. According to Fahad,
"Dubbing this time has been very tough and I'm flying off for a vacation tomorrow, and so we'll begin promoting the film as soon as I am back. That said, I feel we've always relied on word of mouth and I've seen the film and I'm very hopeful. But yes, I want both the releases (NMA 2 and PNJ) to do well. Humayun believes in healthy competition and so do I."
Where Punjab Nahi Jaungi has us hooked with its trailers and teasers, Na Maloom Afraad is on par as well, creating quite a stir with its posters. The latest poster of the film was released yesterday and trust us, its hilarious, just by the looks of it as well. Let's hope the film does great and makes a major mark like its predecessor.

Na Maloom Afraad 2: The sequel we’ve been waiting for

KARACHI  :
In the process of the slow rebirth of Pakistani cinema, 2014 was a year when the audience and the industry didn’t expect the arrival of new stars that would take the cinemas by storm. Nabeel Qureshi’s Na Maloom Afraad became a sleeper hit and solidified Fahad Mustafa as a film star in his cinematic debut. Three years later and the team is set to follow up on the success with a sequel, Na Maloom Afraad 2.

After last year’s smash hit Actor in Law, Qureshi is once again playing his ace and bringing the familiar characters back on screen. From the trailer, launched on June 21, Na Maloom Afraad 2 is bigger and better than the first. With 80% of the film shot in Cape Town, the caper film revolves around Mohsin Abbas Haider, Javed Sheikh and Mustafa’s characters involved in a heist of a Sultan’s gold toilet.

“The industry has grown in the last three years and we also have experience of making two films now. Now that we have given the audience two hits, people are expecting more from us. Therefore, the sequel has to be bigger than that,” Qureshi told The Express Tribune.“What the entire story revolves around is also quite funny and interesting. It has a bigger budget and has a better quality overall.”
Producer Fizza Ali Meerza revealed they keep trying to bring in better equipment to improve the cinematic experience for the audience as well. “The idea is to make a product which always brings an incremental value for the audience, such as the cast, locations, production value and the technicalities which facilitate that.”
She also praised Mustafa for being a thorough professional. “Managing all that he does at this pace is a lot of work. He’s running a production house, doing his regular TV show, and working in films and yet maintaining a work ethic with every team. It’s just amazing. He’s a brilliant actor, and always does his homework.”
The director talked about how there was no film made about strikes and protests in the city before Na Maloom Afraad and the film medium being more socially aware. Qureshi said he doesn’t consciously try to make socially aware films but it just happens automatically. “Whatever experiences we go through here automatically reflect in our films.”
Concurring with him, Meerza added, “Being Pakistanis, we all have a little heartburn inside. We try to cover it but it continues to burn. Sometimes you say it, talk to yourself and others but to extinguish it, you have to raise awareness. And through films, you have to sugarcoat and wrap your message in an entertaining way because the audience wants to be entertained, not lectured.”
Qureshi, being a huge Quentin Tarantino fan, shared how the Pulp Fiction director has influenced his work too. “He has this bizarre ability to inject humour in very serious situations without compromising the intensity of the scene. And he also uses a lot of pop culture references. I believe I do that as well. You will see a ton of Pakistani pop culture references in our films, including Na Maloom Afraad 2.”
Talking about surprises in NMA 2, the director mentioned veteran TV actor Marina Khan, who will be making her film debut, and a theatre actor from National Academy of Performing Arts (Napa), Nazarul Hasan. He shared Sadaf Kanwal will be featured in a dance number in the film too.
As to why the audience should go to watch NMA 2, Meerza said, “It’s because those who have watched the first part will get value addition, seeing the same actors doing so much more and grow in chemistry. And the ones who haven’t watched Na Maloom Afraad will not feel that they haven’t. Despite its connection to the previous one, NMA 2 acts as a standalone film too.”
