Operation 021 is nothing like Waar

An intelligently crafted movie with a background that can be plausible and entrenched in real life events. PHOTO: OPERATION 021FACEBOOK PAGE
First and foremost, before getting down to the brass tacks of the movie Operation 021, those that have the slightest of doubt or inclination that Operation 021 mimics or is made along the same lines as Waar can put their doubts safely to rest.
Operation 021’s principal plot, overall theme, script, character build up and dialogue are poles apart from what was previously seen in Waar. For that reason, Waar and 021, apart from having Shaan Shahid as the main lead, do not have an iota of commonality in between them.
021 is created under the umbrella of One Motion Pictures and the Azad Film Company; produced by Zeba Bakhtiar and her son Azan Sami Khan. It is directed by Jamshed Mahmood Raza, popularly known as Jami, and co-directed by Summer Nicks.

After getting that bit of crucial information out of the way, 021 is a pure spy action thriller feature movie from its start till the credits roll down. Spoiler alert: contrary to the popular perception or any insinuation that you may have that its plot is somehow based around Karachi, could not be more wrong; seeing as how 021 is also coincidentally the dialling prefix for the aforementioned metropolis.
Fundamentally, the numerals ‘021’ in the movie signifies the number of hours (i.e. 21 to be precise) for implementing a plan that could potentially save the two estranged neighbouring countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan from going into further turmoil, all-out chaos and a state of lawlessness. If the plan that is to be executed fails, its repercussions will reverberate in equal damaging terms in Pakistan and as well as in Afghanistan.

The underlying premise of the movie gyrates around the principal character, Kashif Siddiqui, aka Kash (Shaan Shahid), a Pakistani Black Ops Field Officer and how he collaborates with his Afghani acquaintance and friend, Abdullah (Ayub Khoso), to safeguard the national security associated interests of their respective countries. Other cast members include Aamina Sheikh, Hameed Sheikh, Tatmainul Qulb, Ayaz Samoo, Gohar Rasheed, Bilal Ashraf, Wendy Haines, Joe Towne, James Hallett, Abdullah Ghaznavi, Shamoon Abbasi and Daniyal Raheal respectively.

While keeping the spoilers firmly at bay, without going into the nuances of the main plot line of the movie itself, holistically speaking, the plot focuses on the real life revelation that Afghanistan is sitting on a $1 trillion dollar mineral deposits and how the antagonistic elements conspire to steal this natural resources wealth. Apart from that, the narrative of the motion picture is also inspired from the real world bombing of NATO tankers that took place in Afghanistan some years ago. The role of American spy organisation, CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), and how it fits within the context of all of this is also shown expansively and in scrupulous attention to detail.

021 at times can get a tad too complex for its own good with relation to its plot structure but it never gets too convoluted or deviates a lot to lose sight of the main story among the short-lived clutter. It does, however, exude a Jason Bourne-esque vibe and feel, which the spy thriller genre enthusiasts will come to appreciate. All in all, it is an intelligently crafted movie with a background that can be plausible and entrenched in real life events.

Shaan has given another concrete performance, and Ayub Khosa also did justice to his roles, while Aamina Sheikh in her supporting role was on par as well. However, the American actors who are casted in this movie try a bit too hard at times and their performance doesn’t exactly come out as organic or natural as their Pakistani counterparts. But digressing from that point, it is but a small stumbling block in an otherwise excellent movie.

021 delivers on the thrills and on the action it promises, yet it gives us some food for thought with regards to what is happening in Af-Pak relations. Politically speaking, the rhetoric upon which it relies on as fodder may be known beforehand and presented in Hollywood but this shows that Pakistan cinema too is capable of producing an intelligently crafted and engaging spy thriller.
The journey of the rejuvenation and renewal of the Pakistani cinema that was once initiated with Khuda Ke Liye and supplemented by the likes of Bol, Waar and Na Maloom Afraad will be further traversed efficaciously by Operation 021, another feather in the cap of the new age of contemporary Pakistani cinema.

With few minor blemishes here and there that are insignificant, Operation 021 is greater than the sum of its parts and should be watched in order to support our local movie industry, if not for anything else, and for encouraging further movies of this calibre seeing the light of day.

Dolby Atmos: From movie to home theatre

Operation 021 will be the first Pakistani film to be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos. PHOTO: PUBLICITY
KARACHI:
Having revolutionised the sound experience in cinemas over the last two years, Dolby Atmos technology will now foray into the home entertainment space with its latest technology. Cinephiles will now be able to experience “all-around sound” within the comfort of their living room.
At a specially organised sneak peak in Mumbai, Dolby unveiled their home theatre AV receivers, which are already available in the market, reported IANS. Customers can now walk into any Yamaha, Pioneer or Onkyo stores around the world to buy Dolby Atmos-certified amplifiers or AV receivers.
With Dolby Atmos at Home, people will be able to set up their own “realistic entertainment experience” without the hassle of upgrading their speakers, except when opting for greater performance or Blu-ray players with HDMI spec 1.4.
In Atmos for cinemas, the speakers are attached to the ceiling for the best cinematic experience. But this is not the case with Atmos designed for home use. Instead of placing speakers on the ceiling, the Atmos home entertainment device, with its processing, allows upward-firing drivers in regular stand-mounted speakers to bounce sound off the ceiling.
Transformers: Age of Extinction was the first film to be available on Blu-Ray on Atmos Home entertainment. The upcoming Pakistani spy-thriller Operation O21 is the first Pakistani film to be mixed on Dolby Atmos. “We are proud to have an official license to get our film mixed and released on Dolby Atmos. This is not only a big achievement on its own, but also a huge leap for Pakistani cinema at large,” Azaan Sami Khan, the film’s producer, told The Express Tribune.
The Dolby Atmos devices for home usage are still not in Pakistan and only a few cinemas in the Punjab circuit support Dolby Atmos releases.

Will the spy cross the Durand Line? #O21

Jami and his team have made a conscious effort to make a film that doesn’t draw inspiration from Bollywood. PHOTOS: HASAN ANSARI/EXPRESS
KARACHI:
If the schedule of Pakistani films operated like the Chinese calendar, then 2011 would have been called the year of Bol, 2013, the year of Waar, and 2014, expectedly set to be labelled as the year of Operation O21. The team behind Pakistan’s first-ever spy action thriller, 021, unveiled its new trailer and behind-the-scenes (BTS) at Nueplex Cinemas on Sunday.
021 revolves around the recent discovery of mineral reserves in Afghanistan, particularly lithium. A New York Times article published in 2010 and recently shared on the film’sFacebook page said, “The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centres in the world, the United States officials believe.”

“Since everything that happens in Afghanistan has direct implications for Pakistan, we are going to explore the discovery of these mineral reserves in a more global context,” shared Jami, the co-director, producer and writer of the film.
Actors Bilal Ashraf and Gohar Rasheed hosted the event, which kicked off with the screenings, after which the floor was opened for a question-and-answer session. Hesitating to disclose the budget of the film, its co-producer Azaan Sami Khan said, “I will hold the budget of the film till it is complete, but I can tell you that people in the film industry are gradually developing a business sense with regard to cinema.”
The event saw a decent turnout with several members of the Pakistani film fraternity, including Mahira Khan, Adnan Siddiqui, Mohib Mirza and Sheheryar Munawar Siddiqui, attending the event. Film exhibitor and managing director of Mandviwalla Entertainment, Nadeem Mandviwalla, commended the event’s organisers. He expects the film to do well at the box office, reasoning against upcoming releases such as Na Maloom Afraad and Bang Bang.
“We have two Pakistani releases on Eidul Azha this year; one of them is with a star and the other, without a star,” he said. Shaan Shahid, the ‘star’ Mandviwalla was referring to, was also present at the occasion and spoke about the challenges of pulling off the character of a spy in 021.
“I feel that finding the right character for yourself is the most difficult task and once you do that, it’s all hunky-dory,” he said. Two notable absentees from the event were the film’s co-director-writer Summer Nicks and actor Ayub Khoso.
Surprise: Seven minutes of something
The event’s schedule claimed that there will be a surprise for the attendees, which turned out to be the screening of the first seven minutes of 021. It didn’t give away much apart from the fact that it is set in the backdrop of the 2014 general elections in Afghanistan along with lithium reserves that have been discovered in the region.
The opening scene involves a group armed men led by Abdullah (Ayub Khoso), hijacking and blowing up a consignment of trucks, possibly containing extracted mineral reserves. Jami revealed that despite taking up the project after it was halfway through, he has tried to stay true to its preceding director Summer’s vision. “We had to reshoot a certain part of the film after rewriting it, turning it into more of a spy-action thriller along the lines of corporate espionage,” he said.

Ayub Khosa to be seen in Operation 021

Veteran actor Ayub Khosa always puts a smile on our face. The 54-year-old stands tall and proud next to a poster of himself, as he will soon be seen in Operation 021. With films such as Khuda Kay Liye and multiple television dramas under his belt, Khosa always keeps us on the edge of our seats with his nail-biting performances. In Operation 021, Khosa will be seen alongside Shaan Shahid, Aamina Sheikh and Hameed Sheikh and it is to no surprise that he is happy about the direction the Pakistani film industry has taken in recent days. The film, which has been directed by Summer Nicks and Jami and produced by the mother-son duo of Zeba Bakhtiar and her son Azaan Sami Khan, is all set to release this Eidul Azha.

Did you know? Operation 021 will be the first Pakistani film released on Dolby Atmos

The highly anticipated spy thriller Operation 021 would be the first Pakistani film to be mixed on Dolby Atmos announced the Facebook page of the movie.
Films such as Dhoom 3, Kick and D-Day were the major films from Bollywood to have been mixed using the state of the art surround sound technology created by Dolby Laboratories. The Atmos technology enables for an unlimited number of sound tracks to be distributed to theaters for optimal and dynamic rendering to loudspeakers based on the theaters capabilities thus allowing the audience members to have a much wholesome experience at the movie theater.
The film starring veteran actors Shaan Shahid, Ayub Khoso and Shamoon Abbasi is scheduled to release on Eid Al-Azha.
The producer of the film Azaan Sami Khan told Express Tribune that “We are proud to have an official license to get our film mixed and released on Dolby Atmos. This is not only a big achievement but a huge leap for Pakistani cinema at large.”
He further added, “though only a handful of cinemas in Punjab circuit support the Dolby Atmos technology but since we are aiming for a simultaneous International release this would come in very handy in enhancing the audio-visual experience of cinemagoers.”
The story is partly based on real life events including the bombing of Nato tanks in Afghanistan a few years back.
